Belle

Beast led me outside, and we walked around what appeared to be an old rose garden. Technically, it still was a rose garden, trellises stretched forever through the courtyard. However, they were black and wilted on the vine. Yet, it was as if a beating heart remained beneath. I couldn’t understand it.

I touched it, saying, “It’s beautiful––in its own way.”

“It’s warped––deformed. It’s ugly––nothing what it once was.” He said in disgust, as if staring in a mirror at himself.

“You know what it used to look like, though my eyes are seeing it for the first time. Look at its unique color.”

“Charred black, like the reaper himself.”

“No, burnt violet, with crisp, sharp edges, leaning in a graceful rest. I bet it even smells more potent and sweet than before.” I pulled it towards me, slicing my finger from a thorn. “Oww––that hurt!” I extended my finger, seeing a drop of blood.

Beast’s clawed-hand touched mine, holding it securely. He brought it to his lips, gently kissing it. I was surprisingly soothed. Then, he placed the tip in his mouth, suckling it. After a minute, he removed the finger. “It stopped bleeding.”

“Thank you,” I said at his care.

Continuing the unexpected tenderness, he removed the rose from its stem. Rising, he held it to my nose, joining me in a deep breath. The look on his face was pure elation. I silently observed, It almost appears as if he’s breathed life for the first time––maybe ever.

After inhaling, he ordered, “Shut your eyes. Let your nose think for you––surrender to your senses.” I willingly obeyed, blindly inhaling the intense scents. He continued, “Tell me––is it greater than before?”

“It is!” I passionately replied. “I can smell every variation…down to the pollen.”

“Right. It’s something I learned as a child…at our winery. I could identify every flavor within by seeing with my eyes closed.”

“You made your own wine?”

“Not really––father forbid such lowly work. I’d sneak down there and watch every step in the process. The staff showed me things…took time to explain––to teach. It was foreign to me…someone who actually cared––people who actually wanted me around.”

“You sound like you were a good kid…so kind…so different. I mean––not that you’re unkind now.”

“I’m an asshole––I own it. Father said royalty and kindness don’t mix. He said befriending the working scum was beneath a prince. ‘Power is in cruelty. Respect is earned by fear alone,’ he always told me. So, I changed to suit him––to make him proud of me. Of course, he never lived to see the monster he’d created.”

“So, you were an actual royal? Son of the king, himself?”

“I was. My father WAS king of all France. My brother IS king of France. Me…I’m a hideous outcast. As long as I stay hidden here, I’m spared the sword.”

My mouth dropped open wide. “Wow. I––I…never would’ve imagined.”

“It’s a tale few would believe. Some days, I don’t even believe it myself.”

“May I ask…exactly…how…the…beast…happened?”

His face cringed. “Here we go again…the circus freak tells all. I try to let my humanity out and this is what I get.
